Powering the AI Boom: How ES-PEMS Keeps Data Center Generation Compliant

Artificial intelligence has quietly rewritten the rules of the data center. AI training clusters now demand many times more power per rack than traditional compute, and the grid can no longer keep pace. As a result, onsite generation is becoming a permanent part of data center power strategy, with operators increasingly embedding it into long-term plans. For developers, that shift solves a power-availability problem but creates a new one: every natural gas genset and gas turbine on site is now a regulated emissions source.

The new compliance reality behind the meter

When a data center generates its own electricity from reciprocating gas engines or gas turbines, it inherits the same monitoring and reporting obligations as any power producer. Hyperscalers and enterprise clients increasingly require verified Scope 1/2 emissions data, making accurate on-site generation monitoring a commercial requirement, not just a regulatory one.

The traditional answer is a hardware Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS). But CEMS carry a heavy cost: high capital cost per stack, ongoing calibration and technician visits, and data gaps every time an analyzer goes offline for calibration, RATA testing, drift, or repairs. Regulations typically require a minimum of 85% monthly data availability, and every offline hour counts against that figure. On a fast-moving data center build, that is a lot of exposure.

What ES-PEMS does differently

VL Energy's Efficient and Secure Predictive Emissions Monitoring System (ES-PEMS) takes a software-first approach. Instead of sampling the stack directly, it uses AI/ML models and the process sensors already on your unit (temperatures, pressures, flows, load, and exhaust oxygen) to predict multi-gas emissions in real time, with no new hardware required.

For data center generation, that matters in three concrete ways:

Gap-free, compliance-grade data. ES-PEMS runs continuously alongside a CEMS as a certified second layer. When the analyzer drifts, fouls, or comes down for calibration, predicted data fills every gap, protecting reported availability instead of falling back on worst-case substitution data. Where a regulator accepts a software alternative, or where a CEMS is impractical, it can serve as the primary system.

Broad equipment and gas coverage. The system monitors gas turbines, cogeneration, CHP, boilers, and OTSGs, tracking NOx, SOx, CO, CO2, CH4, N2O and more, matching the mixed generation profiles typical of modern sites.

Real-time visibility, not after-the-fact reporting. Operators see stack conditions as they change and can set custom thresholds on any gas or process variable, so they are notified when a limit is approached.

Compliance and efficiency, together

ES-PEMS is the first software-based CEMS alternative approved by both the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEP), delivering up to 90% cost reduction versus traditional CEMS where deployed as the primary system, with high data availability and automated, regulator-ready reporting. Paired with ES-OptiEnergy, the same data stream drives generation and cooling optimization, helping data centers maximize output per unit of fuel while meeting Scope 1/2 disclosure and PUE goals.

As AI pushes data centers into industrial-scale power generation, the operators who win will be the ones who treat emissions monitoring as built-in infrastructure rather than an afterthought. By converting existing generator and turbine data into real-time emissions intelligence, ES-PEMS helps data centre developers and operators better understand the environmental performance of their on-site power systems. Depending on the facility and regulatory requirements, it can complement a hardware CEMS or provide an approved predictive monitoring solution for a specific application.
